Frequently asked questions
How do I get here?
The cities of Umeå and Skellefteå, 67km and 65km respectively, have airports. A flight from Stockholm is often necessary for these routes. On arrival, you can either hire a car or take advantage of the return transfer service we offer.
What temperatures can I expect?
Älglund has a subarctic continental climate. In summer, temperatures often fluctuate between 20°C and 25°C. This is the time of the midnight sun, so it hardly ever gets dark. In winter, temperatures can be very changeable from one week to the next, with fluctuations of between -5°C and -25°C. It’s always important to check the forecast before you leave.
What equipment will I need?
For the training camps, you will need to bring your sports kit with you. If you’re going out at night, headlamps will be provided.
Bring sports shoes, snow boots, and socks for the snow, thermal clothing, ski trousers and a jacket, a pair of gloves, a hat and a buff.
Some activities will be indoors and will require less equipment, but others will be in direct contact with the snow. So it’s best to have a waterproof layer.
For the sleigh: You can use hand warmers if you wish, but the equipment mentioned above will do. Blankets are provided in the sleigh. Please note: Don’t wear tight clothing (especially socks, gloves and shoes), as this will prevent the heat from circulating.
What physical condition do I need to be in?
The training camps focus on cardio. Although the exercises we offer allow you to work on different aspects (muscle strength, coordination, flexibility, etc.), aerobic effort remains omnipresent. The aim is to vary the intensity according to ability. This allows you to adapt while avoiding stopping.
So, for this type of trip, you’ll need to be fit, sporty and already do some kind of regular physical activity.
How long does the sleigh ride last?
For a 10km sled ride, you should allow around an hour, depending on the weather conditions, which can make it easier or harder for the dogs to make their way. Two hours are planned for this activity, so that you can spend more time with the dogs and learn more about them, as well as discover the preparation process.
Can I stroke the dogs?
Dogs are often very excited before they set off, and it’s always best to wait until the end of the tour to have a calmer contact with them.
Some dogs are cuddly, others are more mischievous. The musher will be happy to give you all the information you need and teach you the right gestures before approaching them.
When is the best time to visit us?
Depending on the season, you come for different reasons.
In winter, you set yourself up for an extreme challenge. You’re fighting the cold and the dark, but you’re also enjoying the beauty of the snow-covered landscape. The colours are superb and you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights. This is also the season for sledding, and you can enjoy a nice tour with the dogs.
In summer, the climate is pleasant and mild. You’re surrounded by magnificent green nature. It almost never gets dark, so living conditions are much easier, but the mosquitoes are back too. Various dog activities are on offer, such as dog kart (if it’s not too hot) and canicross or cani-hike.
The environment is constantly changing, so your holiday dates will depend above all on your criteria in terms of activities, light and temperatures.
Don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
How many hours of daylight in winter?
December is often thought of as the best time of the year to visit the Nordic countries. But we often forget that it’s also the darkest. The days get shorter until December 21st before gradually getting longer until June 21st. In December, therefore, you can expect 3-4 hours of daylight. The opposite effect occurs in summer, when the night also disappears.
